Introduction and Overall Goal
The Tsuu T’ina Nation has engaged Dillon Consulting Limited and Russell Everett Architect Ltd. to assist with a new Community Housing Plan for 2007. The overall goal of this project is to develop a housing plan that will identify a suitable site(s) for a new housing project, with the input of the whole Nation, and with the direction of a new Housing Committee.
What is the Project Team doing?
We understand the urgency that surrounds the need for housing and current challenges, and will be working towards a comprehensive and time-sensitive completion of the project. There are two main steps completed recently that will initiate this project:
Housing Committee
The Chief and Council have selected the Housing Committee which is comprised of: 1 Elder, 1 Youth, and 3 reps at large. This committee will play a vital role in building community support and ultimately implementing the overall project.
Community Housing Workshop
Working with the newly formed Housing Committee, the project team is holding an evening workshop to involve the whole membership, discuss future directions for housing, review community vision, goals and objectives, and review future development.
Next Steps
Over the next few months, the Project Team, with guidance from the Housing Committee, will be:
Developing 3 Housing Concepts
Working with the Housing Committee, and reviewing current housing data and information, the project team will develop three alternative housing concepts to help relieve the pressure on current housing resources. It will take into account existing servicing, proposed and future development, site access, and suitability for housing. Working within the selected sites, we will develop concept plans that will outline the location of the future housing and ensure the plan is incorporated into the overall mix of the community.
Presentation to Chief and Council
Once the three concepts are developed by the project team and housing committee, they will be presented to Chief & Council.
A Second Community Meeting
A second community meeting for all members will be held and the merits of each housing concept will be discussed. A second bulletin will also be distributed at this time, inviting comments on the three concepts. A choice will then be made between the three concepts, and beneficial elements of each may be incorporated into the final design.
Final Site Development Concept
Once the final concept is chosen and refined, the project team along with the Housing Committee will meet to review the concept and ensure it meets the community’s vision and goals and then make a presentation to Chief and Council to approve the plan.
What will Dillon be reporting?
Information Bulletins
This bulletin is the first of two that Dillon will prepare to summarize project progress and discuss remaining activities.
Final Housing Report
Dillon will also be preparing a Final Housing Report encompassing the details of development for the selected site(s) and housing lot layouts, and identifying the associated infrastructure required to bring the proposed development online. |
